Call to register - Fearless 2 Color Mittens FIBER FRIDAYS via ZOOM with Mary Scott Huff

The mittens of Norway are stunning to see and uncommonly comfortable to wear, with good reason: Their special architecture has evolved over time for nearly-perfect anatomical correctness. Join self-professed stranded colorwork junkie Mary Scott Huff for this 3-hour session to learn interesting history, simple techniques, and as always, sexy party tricks to knit your own.

Joining us from Portland, Oregon, Mary is the author of six books about knitting, including The Mitten Handbook.This is an introduction to stranded colorwork knitting, as well as an exploration of traditional Selbuvotter techniques and history. This class includes free class pattern for the Nordica Mitten. 

Students who are comfortable with stranded colorwork, or who have attended Mary’s “2 Strings=Not Scary” class will be ready for this experience.

DK yarn in two highly-contrasting colors, approx. 200yds each  Suggested yarns:  Scout by Kelbourne Woolens, Lore by The Fibre Co., Rowan Felted Tweed and Quaker Hill by Plymouth Yarn Co. 

1 set each; size US 2 & 3 DPN.  Adjust needle sizes if necessary to obtain correct gauge.

Note-taking supplies, tapestry needle, waste yarn.


7 sts per inch in two-color stranded colorwork


Determine gauge by swatching in 2-color stockinette stitch a 4 X 4 inch swatch in the round.  Be sure to wash and block your swatch when determining gauge. 

Before class, select the cast on of your choice for k1 p1 rib, and the needle configuration you prefer for small-diameter circular knitting. With MC and smaller needles, CO 54 sts and join for working in rounds, being careful not to twist.  Work rows 1-4 of chart in k1 p1 rib, as indicated. 

Skill Level: Intermediate
Skill Details: Students should be familiar with knitting in the round on DPN, 2 circulars or Magic Loop techniques.
Requirements: Students who are comfortable with stranded colorwork, or who have attended Mary?s ?2 Strings=Not Scary? class will be ready for this experience.
