Tapestry Weaving with David Johnson via - HYBRID Format

Class Description:

In this tapestry class students, will learn to use various technical processes (plain weave, soumak, knotted pyle) to produce a

sampler and then apply these techniques to a small finished piece of their own design. Registration for this class includes a

warped loom that is yours to keep and a selection of weft yarns to get you started. Zoom students will have looms shipped to

This class will be offered in a hybrid format, meaning that students can choose to participate in person at Longmont Yarn Shoppe or via Zoom. Please make a note in your registration about how you plan to attend. A non-downloadable recording of each class will session will be sent to students within 24 hours of the class to review for 1 week after receiving it.

Class one will include a discussion on the historical and cultural traditions in tapestry weaving and the methods used to produce imagery and pattern. Class two starts with a review of the sample weavings and a conversation on designing and using a “cartoon” to control imagery and pattern allowing participants to come up with their own unique designs. Class three we will continue to weave, as well as cover finishing techniques and warping.

The sample photo is an example of David's work (not the class project). Students will create their own design after learning the techniques.

Loom and Yarn Kit (included in your tuition):
- a warped loom made by the instructor, which students can keep
- wool weft yarn (Brown Sheep Lanaloft Worsted) in 0.5 oz balls in 12 colors:

Delivery of kit: Please make a note in your registration whether you will attend in-person and pick up your kit from the Shoppe or on the first day of class - or if you will attend via Zoom and need to have your kit shipped to you. Please allow 1-2 weeks for shipping.

Students must provide:

Scissors
Computer or electronic tablet (I-Pad or other) for logging into Zoom for the class (a cell phone's screen size is insufficient for effective learning).
Optional - but very helpful - a cell phone to allow for a second login to Zoom in order to share progress with the teacher.

Each class is 3 hours long, including a break. Class sessions begin at:

Cancellation Policy for LYS Classes

DISCLAIMER: Class may be cancelled if less than 3 students are enrolled.

If LYS cancels the class, payment for your class will be refunded in full or can be transferred to another upcoming class. If we do need to cancel your class for low enrollment, the decision will be made 24 hours in advance and students will be notified by phone and/or email.

Class may also be cancelled for inclement weather or instructor illness. Students will be notified by phone if this happens and can attend the rescheduled class or have their class fee returned 100%.

Refund Policy for LYS Classes

If you need to return your class enrollment for a refund for any reason, we completely understand! Sometimes things pop up and life gets in the way of our crafting.

See the time table below for eligible refunds on LYS classes:

At least 72 hours prior notice — 100% refund
24 - 72 hours prior notice — 50% refund for store credit
Less than 24 hours prior notice — Not eligible for a refund.

Student no-shows are also not eligible for a refund.

Skill Details:	We welcome all skill levels! The curriculum is taught in hybrid format; you can choose to participate either in person or via Zoom.
Instructor:	David Johnson
Instructor Bio:	David Johnson is a tapestry weaver with extensive professional experience employed at the Oregon School of Arts and Crafts as well as the Appalachian Center for Craft. More recently, David has taught for the Tucson Weavers Guild as well as the Intermountain Weavers Conference in Durango, Colorado. Upcoming workshops include The Weavers Guild of Rochester, New York, and the Sedona Weavers in Arizona. In 2021, he collaborated with the Spanish Peaks Tapestry Weavers in presenting "Crossovers in Tapestry: a Southwest Conference" in Pueblo, Colorado. David is currently president of the Rocky Mountain Weavers Guild.
