Introduction to Coiled Vessels

Join us in learning the basics of the coiling technique to weave a small to medium size vessel.  The class will include how to start the center, splicing, design, shaping, and how to end the vessel smoothly.

Please plan on approximately 10 - 12 hours spent working on your vessel between the 2 sessions.

Materials included in your class fee - these will be given to you on the day of class.
10 yards of 8/32 Fiberflex Core
Instructional handout

Materials list - please gather these supplies prior to class and bring them with you!

Large tapestry needle with a BLUNT POINT
Glue - suggested is Aleene's original Tacky Glue.  You can buy it at Target, JoAnne's, Michael's, McGuckins.
Scissors - largish and sharp
2 colors of worsted wt wool yarn, at least 2 ply - (2-ply is best because of strength.  More than 2-ply gets a little bulky and hard to make smooth stitches)

Mary took a walk in the LYS worsted wt dept and suggested these yarns for coiling a vessel:  Painted SkyMalabrigo RiosSesame by Berocco, Grande Alegria and Alegria Bocados, Ultra Wool and Shepherds Wool.

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: Students will need to have fine motor skills, ability to hold a tapestry needle tightly and some experience with yarn.
Instructor: Mary Balzer
Instructor Bio: Mary has been weaving and playing with the fiber arts for 30 years and is still having fun. Coiling is a technique that incorporates her love of vessels and circles, perfect metaphors for the circles of life in which we all go round, one way or another. She has exhibited her vessels in CO, NM, FL, and WA galleries, as well as national basketry shows, and has been teaching the coiling technique since 1995.
