Machine Knit Garment Skills I: Swatching to Pattern Conversion

The focus of this series of classes is on techniques and will require homework if the student wants a finished baby cardigan. However, the series is designed to give you the skills to knit your first garment, whether or not you choose to knit along during the series.

The first session will focus on determining your gauge from the swatch you knit prior to class, according to instructions. We will use that information to adjust the baby cardigan pattern to your gauge. The Magic Formula will be used to calculate shaping.  Calculations for the back of the cardigan will be completed in class and students can apply their new knowledge for other pattern pieces, as homework and in preparation for future classes. This skill can be applied to any knit schematic. Pieces knit from the class worksheet will be used, though not required, for subsequent classes.

Students who sign up for and attend all 3 sessions of this class series will be given a 20.00 Gift Card to LYS at the 3rd class

Materials needed:

Calculator, paper & pencil.

Knitting machine in working condition, with tools. There is no requirement to bring a machine to this class, but one will be required for the preparatory swatch homework and for Machine Knit Garment Techniques II and III.

Yarn appropriate to machine’s gauge, preferably not 100% cotton.  If the knitter intends to give the baby cardigan to someone, the yarn should be washable and baby appropriate.  These techniques will work with any yarn suitable for the student’s machine.  Bamboo Pop is suitable for standard or mid-gauge machines. Any worsted weight yarn would be good for a bulky machine.

Homework PRIOR TO CLASS:

Knit a swatch with your yarn, following these instructions for your gauge of machine, prior to class.  Block your swatch before class in the same way the garment will be cared for, so an accurate gauge can be determined.  Contact instructors with questions.
