Intro to Embroidery for Hand Knits

In this class we will create an embroidered sampler with a mid-winter theme to practice basic embroidery stitches suitable for creating figurative designs, as well as geometric borders or all-over patterns, to embellish hand knit fabric. We will discuss appropriate materials and techniques, as well as the opportunities and challenges particular to embroidering on knitting.

Pattern will be supplied at class.

Homework:

Prior to class, knit and block a 7” x 7” swatch in stockinette stitch with a seed stitch border as follows:

Materials:

Yarn: Fingering weight (Shown in Ancient Arts Lascaux Fine Denim 2) 80 yd.

Needles: US 2/2.75 mm, straight or circular needle(s).

Adjust needle size as necessary to achieve stitch and row gauge.

Gauge:

Stockinette Stitch: 28 stitches x 42 rows = 4” x 4”/ 10 cm x 10 cm

Instructions:

Cast on 51 sts. Beginning with a RS row, work 6 rows in seed stitch as follows:

RS and WS rows: *k1, p1, repeat from * end with k1

For the next 62 rows, work in Stockinette Stitch (knit RS, purl WS) with the first and last 6 stitches in each row worked in Seed Stitch as established.

Work 6 rows in Seed stitch. Bind off.

Weave in ends and wet or steam block.
