CANCELLED - Shawls & Accessories: Dimensions of Style and Fit VIA ZOOM

Most of us know what looks good on us and what we feel comfortable in when it comes to our clothes.  But what about shawls and other un-sized accessories?

Many of us take on projects because they are beautiful to us only to find ourselves stymied at the end of the process because we don’t know how to wear what we’ve made so it looks and feels good.

This class aims to give you the tools you need to select projects that will work for your aesthetic , your body, and your life.  There is homework involved for this class, to maximize the results you can expect from the content.

Section 1

We will work through a series of exercises aimed at understanding our personal styles and discerning what role(s) we want knitwear to play in our wardrobes and lives (warmth?; ornamentation?; skill-display?; essential wardrobe element?).

We then extend what we have learned to knitwear in three ways:

  1.      How do I want to feel?
  2.      How do I want to look?
  3.      What accessory/shawl-shape feels/looks best on me?

We consider the following shapes: short & long cowls, short & long rectangles, triangles – symmetrical and asymmetrical, crescents, and capelets.

Section 2

You determine your preferred styling(s) using the answers to the three questions in Section 1, selecting from several basic styling possibilities for each shape using the following criteria as a guide:

  1.      Feels good – start your assessment without the mirror
  2.      Looks good – decide what is most flattering in color, shape, scale, and styling.  We take into consideration how these factors guide a           viewer’s eyes; we will treat the knitwear as part of a composition that leads the eye to see the body in a particular way.
  3.      Function – the styling must allow free movement; knitwear-misbehavior is controlled
  4.      You can see the knitting – the colorwork, stitch patterns, and unique attributes of the fiber are all displayed and visible.

Section 3

Using the information gathered in Sections 1 & 2, you will determine what the ideal dimensions of your chosen shape(s) are depending on your preferred styling(s).

Section 4

You will analyze your existing, completed knitwear and current and future projects based on what you have learned in the previous 3 sections.

This section has two related goals:

  1.      Make decisions about whether what you have already made really works for you and experiment with using knitwear jewelry and                 closures to maximize style and function
  2.      Personalize your selection / modification of existing and new projects for best results
