We’ll end the class with your first scarf or shawl project well underway.

A minimum of 8 students is required to run this series by March 17th . In the event we do not get 8 students it will be cancelled. Sign up early to ensure this valuable series runs!

Class 1:

How Lace Works, and How to Work It

An introduction to the stitches and stitch patterns in lace knitting. We’ll build skills for reading the patterns, and working them. We’ll cover working from written instructions and charts, and I’ll provide tips for keeping track, counting stitches, and making sure it’s turning out!

Skills required: suitable to knitters who are confident with knit, purl, increasing and decreasing.

Materials: students should have on hand some medium-weight yarn in a light color, and 4.5-5mm/US #7-8 needles for working flat; a few stitch markers.

Class 2:

Next steps in Lace:

In this session, we’ll build more skills for lace work, and get you ready for your first project. We’ll practice some more advanced lace stitches – multiple yarnovers, changing stitch counts, double-sided lace. I’ll talk about methods for fixing – and preventing! – mistakes. And we’ll discuss yarn and needle choices. We will provide you with three patterns to choose from from the most simple to the most involved and challenging - you get to decide depending on the level of challenge you are seeking!

Materials: Same as for the previous week.

Class 3:

After a couple of weeks to knit, we’ll regroup to talk about your project. We’ll address any questions or issues that have come up. I’ll talk about finishing techniques – weaving in ends, and blocking. I’ll also show you a few solutions for keeping your edges good and flexible – stretchy bind-offs, and attached edgings.
