Jennifer Miller: LADDERBACK JACQUARD via ZOOM!
October 13th, 2023
If you have trouble with stranded colorwork - it’s too tight, not flexible, catches on fingers or jewelry, or generally just doesn’t look good or feel comfortable, this is the class for you! Ladderback jacquard stranding, originally developed & used for machine knitting, is a version of double-knitting with only a one-stitch column. This technique can used in the round or flat! It is particularly useful for motifs in which a single color is carried more than an inch, or when you need a stretchy, flexible garment such as a hat or cowl. This technique is easy to learn & apply to any stranded colorwork pattern!

October 20th, 2023
This class focuses on other ways to add colour to your projects. We’ll talk about how to join and manage your yarns, how to avoid holes and gaps. We’ll address key trouble spots like weaving in ends tidily. We’d spend time on the issue of the jog when working in the round, reviewing various methods for a ‘jogless’ jog, and talking about the almost-magical helical stripes. Along the way, we’ll talk about how these methods allow you to customize and add a personal touch to your projects – or use up some stash!

We’ll explain how to read sizing tables and schematics to understand how a garment is sized. We'll show you how to measure yourself properly to make the right choice. Kate Atherley: MATH FOR KNITTERS! Solving the Knitter's Number Puzzles - VIA ZOOM!
November 3rd, 2023
Everything you need to know to figure out all those tricky numbers puzzles you encounter in your knitting. We’ll focus on how math fits into pattern reading – all the aspects of counting and working and keeping track on instructions. We’ll cover things like “Decrease every 8 rows 10 times”, and "Increase 12 sts evenly distributed across the row". We’ll talk about calculating yardage in partial balls of yarn, and how to ensure you’ll have enough to complete your project. We’ll also have a discussion of gauge and what it really means – and how to deal with it if you can’t match. Suitable for newer knitters, and those who wish to get more comfortable reading patterns - it's all about conquering your fear of the numbers and making you a more powerful knitter!

Kate Atherley: FEARLESS FINISHING via ZOOM!
November 10th, 2023
Many knitters avoid a lot of garment patterns because of the finishing work required, and even the most experienced knitters often have holes in their finishing knowledge – or simply lack confidence about them. The reason is simple: information in books and patterns is often very weak in this area, leaving knitters to try to figure it out themselves. This workshop demonstrates some practical, useful and sensible finishing skills. Our objective is to dispel a lot of common myths, break down some common sources of confusion, and take the fear out of it. We’ll cover the three key seaming methods – reviewing how to do them and where to use them, including how to set in a sleeve, and we’ll talk about picking up stitches, blocking, and weaving in ends.

"The class worked really well over Zoom. Stephanie did a great job of demonstrating the techniques needed, and had two cameras going so we could see her face and her hands while she was teaching. It was nice to interact with the other class members, too." - Cheryl A.
We have identified a number of classes that lend themselves to being offered in a virtual classroom via Zoom. Our teachers are very knowledgeable and experienced in the topic they are teaching, and will be using 2 cameras for all classes (there may not be 2 cameras for KALs and CALS) so you can not only see and hear them, they can also demonstrate what they are teaching as well. Supplies must be shipped in advance of the class so please plan accordingly.
We recommend all students use a device larger than a phone to be able to see what is being taught.
We stand behind our programs. If you try online learning and decide it isn’t a fit, we will refund 100% of your class fee, or it can be transferred to an in-store class once we are open to the public again.
We do ask that you use yarn and products from LYS for our Knit/Crochet-A-Longs and our classes.
