CLOSED Fiberside Chats: Sarah Solomon featuring Harrisville Designs
In this Fiberside Chat Sarah will give us a sneak peek of her debut collection for Harrisville Designs, slated to release at the end of October. It takes a village to make a design collection, combining the skills of knitters, designers, technical specialists, photographers, models and many more; and in the case of Harrisville Designs it takes a literal village to make the yarn as well.
Sarah will share a little of the history of the mill and its modern operations and tell us about the yarn they make, ranging from the heirloom-quality Highland and Shetland lines they started 50 years ago to their newest and most contemporary-looking yarns, Daylights and Nightshades, made with American-raised Cormo wool. We’ll learn about the running of a mill and the building of the extraordinary 64-color palette and then take a look behind the scenes at the making of this latest pattern collection.
About Harrisville:
Harrisville Designs has been family-owned and operated for 50 years, producing yarn in one of the best-preserved early-industrial villages in the nation. Yarn has been spun in this water-powered, brick mill town since 1794! Harrisville Designs simultaneously looks back to their early-American roots and forward to the future of wool and manufacturing in this country in their efforts to provide enduring, affordable, and high-quality materials for knitters, weavers and craftspeople.
Sarah Solomon Bio:
Sarah is a knitwear designer, writer and teacher based in New York City. She started knitting as an adult, fueled by a passion to knit sweaters. A self-styled “sweater evangelist” she now works to bring more knitters into the sweater-knitting fold through her patterns and teaching. With a background in woven construction and dressmaking, Sarah brings a love of details and fine finishing to her hand knitting designs and enjoys creating and teaching techniques that are simple to master but yield beautiful, long-lasting results. Her interests range from all aspects of traditional hand knitting to re-imagining ready-to-wear and machine-knit details for hand knitters. Sarah’s patterns and articles have appeared in Interweave Knits, Knitscene, knit.wear, Pom Pom Quarterly, and Vogue Knitting, and in collections by yarn companies large and small. In addition to her self-published work, Sarah is the Director of Knitwear Design for Harrisville Designs, a historic woolen mill in Harrisville, NH. In her design work, she enjoys creating garments and accessories from exceptional yarns that are knittable, wearable and designed to last. Sarah is also an avid sewer and spinner and loves handwork in many forms. Find her patterns on Ravelry and follow her work on Instagram as @intothewool or at www.intothewool.wordpress.com.
This is a one-time live Zoom Event on Saturday, October 9th at 4:00pm Eastern, 3:00pm Central, 2:00pm Mountain, 1:00pm Pacific.
