From "Never" to Now: Lucy's Double-Knit Blanket Adventures!
Many years ago, you might have heard Lucy announce that despite loving double knitting, she would never knit anything larger than a potholder. But for the past 13 years, center-out double-knit blankets have been her passion.
Her first double-knit blanket was rectangular - with all its attendant challenges. Nearly a decade later, she began a series of octagonal blankets. Then she discovered JC Briar's extraordinary charting system, Stitch Maps, which opened the door to far more extravagant designs. She now creates, on average, one blanket each year.....along with being exceptional - they're large. After several experiments to achieve a square blanket, Lucy has finally cracked the formula with the Flower Power DK Blanket!
Join Lucy for a discussion of circular tubular cast-ons for double knitting, plus an inside look at charting and pattern writing. We can't wait to visit Lucy's colorful extraordinary world of knitting in this Fiberside Chat!
Bio: Lucy has been an adventurous knitter since she was 17. Originally from the UK, she served as a navigating officer in the Merchant Navy before settling in Nova Scotia, where she has lived for the past 34 years.
In 1995, The Fleece Artist in Halifax—her local yarn shop—offered her the opportunity to teach classes, and she quickly discovered a passion for sharing the engineering marvels of knitting. Since then, she has taught everywhere from Antarctica to the Yukon, and many places in between. She hasn’t stopped sharing the joy of “Happy Stitches” since.
Known as much for her colorful style as for her friendly, detailed, technique-rich patterns—especially her love of double-layer knitting—Lucy is the author of three books: Cool Socks Warm Feet, Cool Knitters Finish in Style, and A Little Book of BIG Holes for Hand-knitters!. She has also filmed 16 instructional DVDs.
Her online classes on Craftsy.com include Foundations of Double Knitting, My First Socks, Next Steps in Socks, Fearless Knitting, and the free Sock of the Month series (2016). You can also find her on KnitStars (Season 4), on Instagram, on her Lucyknit YouTube channel, and at LittleBarnStudio.ca, where both her patterns and virtual DVDs are available. She also continues to offer cruise workshops through Craft Cruises.
