Beyond the Motif with Mary Jane: Designing in the Fair Isle Tradition!
Spend an hour with Mary Jane as she shares her love of Fair Isle knitting! Inspired by the rich textile traditions of the Shetland Islands, she has immersed herself in the distinctive techniques and patterns of Fair Isle through extensive reading, studying vintage knits, and exchanging stories and knowledge with local knitters over cups of tea.
As the author of six colorwork knitting books, Mary Jane blends design, storytelling, and craftsmanship to help knitters grow their skills and confidence.
During this inspiring session, you’ll:
• Explore Mary Jane’s extensive collection of swatches and see how motifs become the foundation for future designs, with insight into her creative process and pattern development.
• Enjoy a beautiful slideshow of her favorite places in the Shetland Islands.
• Watch as she demonstrates holding two strands of yarn, using a Shetland knitting belt (with good humor!), and “brak and eek,” an alternative to steeking.
Mary Jane believes there’s no single “right” way to knit—experimentation is half the fun. So grab a cup of tea, your needles, and some yarn, and join us!
