Baby Surprise Pattern expanded-ABCSJ
Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Baby Surprise Jacket has become near legendary since its conception in 1968, from the newsletter #21. The jacket is knitted back and forth in Garter stitch, then cleverly folded and completed by weaving the shoulder seams. This updated pattern includes Elizabeth’s original Baby Surprise Jacket instructions, original Adult Surprise instructions (with added sizing help), and instructions for a Child’s Surprise jacket. We include row by row instructions for the Baby Surprise Jacket.
The pattern has great color photographs! The baby jacket pattern has Elizabeth’s original written instructions as well as row by row instructions. Also included are notes on stripe placement, sizing for different stitch gauges, and construction diagrams.
Techniques used in the pattern are also explained, including:
- Provisional cast on
- Backward loop Make 1
- Lifted Increase
- Applied I-Cord / I-Cord cast off
- Garter stitch weaving
- Half weave
- One row buttonhole
- After Thought pockets
- Sewn cast off
