The team at Malabrigo spoke with Jill and ask her all about this pattern. Read about Jill’s inspiration for this shawl, tips for the knit-along and all about Knit Sisu in this interview.

Q: Why did you decide to participate on the Open Call we did? I am a huge fan of Malabrigo yarns! I also know how great a KAL is for the knitting community, as well as the participating Local Yarn Stores. The motivation to join the Open Call was to hopefully bring some joy to knitters with an engaging design, show off some beautiful Malabrigo yarn, as well as support LYS in a KAL.

Q: What is your favorite part of your knit-along design and why? My favorite part of this design is the chance for knitters to do what I call “BYOD - Be Your Own Designer”. The Friendship Shawl is designed using 3 colors but can be easily tailored to as many colors as one would like (or even be kept monochromatic, which also looks beautiful). The sections have short repeats, so they can be made as long or as short as a knitter would like. The options for creativity are endless with this piece!

Q: What should knitters pay attention to when working this pattern? Do you have any tips or tricks that will make knitting this pattern easier? The biggest thing to pay attention to are the RS/WS increase and decreases - these specifically create the boomerang shawl shape. A tip is to place a removable stitch marker on the RS of the work. The RS has an increase at the beginning of the row, and a decrease at the end (the WS has an additional increase at the end of the row). I find the small stitch marker is a helpful reminder that the RS has those 2 important shaping stitches.

Q: What do you think knitters will enjoy the most about this project? It’s easy to fall into the movement of the stitches in this project as it is very meditative and structured. The garter sections fly by and the lace sections keep knitters engaged without being too reliant on the written pattern. After learning the repeats, knitters will enjoy the freedom of creating something beautiful without feeling necessarily tied to the written pattern.

Q: What types of interaction can participants expect from you during the KAL? I would like to be as involved as possible! I’m happy to start a chat group, do online Meet & Greet and question sessions, and even do live support videos for Tips, Tricks, & Techniques for the shawl.

Q: Was there any particular inspiration you had when creating this piece? The inspiration for this piece came from my friendship and working relationship with colleague Michelle Dalbec of myoga.com. She and I co-designed an intricate and advanced shawl for our own knitting retreat, and I created an all-skill level version that reflects the foundations of Knit Sisu designs, but also of our friendship. In the Friendship Shawl, the individual color blocks of garter stitch hold a foundation of individuality, while the lace sections introduce and intertwine colors and stitches, showing the bond and connectedness that both friendship and knitting provide.

Q: Have you ever participated in a knit-along before and if so, what is your favorite part of a KAL? Yes - I have participated in many KALs, and they are always so much fun! I love being able to see each knitter’s own creativity come through the piece, and immediately connect with a community over a shared love of knitting!

Q: What is something you wish people knew about you as a designer? Over the years, I’ve found a lot of comfort, joy, and confidence through knitting. As an instructor, I have also learned a lot about what knitters do - and don’t - want in their knitting experience. So I founded Knit Sisu on the basis of helping others find joy and confidence on their needles. Knit Sisu patterns aren’t fussy, nor extremely difficult, but accessible, engaging, mindful, and help the knitter be present in the moment of beauty they are creating. Sisu is a Finnish word that translates to a quiet mindset of courage, strength, and perseverance. It’s rooted in joy, nature, and faith, and a value with which I was raised. If I can help just one knitter find comfort, joy, and confidence through the help of my patterns, lessons, and/or support, then I’ve done my job.
